Věděli jste, že světlo pro rostliny se měří v PPFD nebo DLI? Světlo typicky měříme v Luxech (což je fotometrická jednotka intenzity osvětlení, jinak taky lumeny na metr čtvereční), protože lidské oko je citlivé na zelenou barvu a zjednodušeně tak můžeme říci, že čím víc zeleného světla, tím více Lux. Nicméně u rostlin je to přesně naopak, jsou citlivé na červenou a modrou složku světla a pro jej nemůžeme měřit v Luxech. Jakmile tedy do hry vstoupí LED světlo, jsou rázem Lumeny hodnotou, která nám nic neřekne.
Rostliny dokáží absorbovat a transformovat světlo v rozsahu vlnových délek mezi 300 a 700 nanometry, čemuž říkáme fotosynteticky aktivní záření neboli PAR (photosynthetic active radiation). PAR nicméně není jednotka, jak je někdy mylně uváděno.

PPFD (Photosynthetic photon flux density) je jednotka určující hustotu fotosynteticky aktivních fotonů, tedy kolik jich dopadne na jeden metr čtvereční za jednu sekundu. Jednotkou je mmol/m2/s. Nicméně tento údaj nám neřekne, jaké je celkové záření ale pouze jaká je jeho intenzita v tom kterém místě.
Další jednotkou je DLI (Daily light integral), která udává množství fotonů dopadajících na 1m2 za den. Jednotka je mol/m2/den. DLI se využívá například ve skleníku při výpočtu asimilačním osvětlením nebo u rostlin, které nejsou fotoperiodické jako je salát, rajčata a další (tedy rostlin, které nereagují na délku světla a tmy). Při použití ve skleníku světlem doplníte dávku, kterou dodalo přirozené sluneční záření na optimální hodnotu DLI a ve druhém můžeme prodlužovat fotoperiodu a snížit dávku PPF.
Klíčové je také pochopení rozdílu mezi PPF a PPFD a ten tkví v tom, že PPF je možství „vystřelených“ fotonů, nicméně to ještě neznamená, že všechny dopadnou na plochu listu, protože také samozřejmě záleží na vzdálenosti „výstřelu“ a tím pádem hustotě fotonů na ploše, a to je PPFD.
